7. The Narrative War | Muharram 2026

In this lecture, Sheikh Mohammed Al-Hilli discusses the "Narrative War," a concept centered on how information, history, and media are used to shape public opinion and influence how society understands key events - specifically concerning the tragedy of Karbala and the legacy of the Ahlulbayt.

Key Pillars of the Lecture:

  • Systematic Distortion of History (1:35:00 - 1:40:00): The Sheikh explains that Bani Umayya and Bani Abbas systematically destroyed historical records and supported biased authors to dilute the significance of Ashura. He cites historical texts that attempted to rewrite the events of Karbala, aiming to diminish the culpability of oppressors and create narratives that excuse or ignore the massacre.

  • The Propaganda Machine (1:40:50 - 1:48:00): The lecture highlights how fabricated narrations were introduced over 1,400 years to celebrate the day of Ashura as a day of blessing, directly contradicting the mourning of the Imam Hussain (as). He notes how theological arguments were manufactured to label Imam Hussain's revolution as "fitna" (sedition) to discourage resistance against unjust rulers.

  • Internal Narrative Challenges (1:58:40 - 2:03:00): Sheikh Al-Hilli addresses the internal narrative war, where misconceptions about Shia beliefs—such as the status of women in Islam—are absorbed by the community due to constant exposure to external media and algorithms. He emphasizes the need for intellectual discourse, workshops, and strong educational foundations to combat these doubts.

  • The Responsibility of the Shia (1:55:00 - 1:57:30, 2:08:00 - 2:11:00): A major call to action is for the Shia community to "own the narrative." The Sheikh advocates for:

    • High-quality media and institutional support: Creating platforms that are principled and independent.

    • Engaging the world: Presenting the universal values of Hussain in a language that non-Muslims and non-Shia can appreciate.

    • Representing values: Conducting oneself with integrity to reflect the teachings of the Ahlulbayt in daily professional and social life.

Historical Examples and Lessons:

  • The Fourth Imam (as): The Sheikh highlights how Imam Sajjad (as) used his sermons in Kufa and Sham to systematically dismantle the propaganda of the Umayyads by asserting his identity and the truth of Karbala (2:12:50).

  • Imam Hassan (as): The lecture touches upon the character assassination of Imam Hassan (as) by the Bani Umayya and explains that his sacrifice was equally profound, rooted in his love for the Ahlulbayt and his awareness of the future tragedy at Karbala (2:14:30 - 2:16:30).
